The 2024 BFA class understands how shared experience can shape a generation. In the fall of 2020, these students didn’t step into their first university classroom, instead they logged in. Those moments of finding a seat and smiling at your new classmate didn’t happen and the excitement of working in a classroom thick with weirdness, laughter and unbridled curiosity didn’t happen, either. The wait to physically be in community was extensive, but once together, this group found their collective voice.

Care and repair, two words that describe a generation of creative, community building individuals who see the nurturing of all living things as the remedy for the future. The title of this exhibition speaks to hope and the artworks reshape how we consider this world. Each artist is expressing how they feel, and they do it publicly for all to witness. Through their art, these students are using vulnerability and empathy as a connector. This heartfelt work should be thought of as Silver Bullets. If we all had the courage to show ourselves and respect how others express themselves, then remedies wouldn’t be needed.

In solidarity with the incredible courage that these students have presented, I will express my gratitude to be in their presence. These students are my Silver Bullets. Their talent, humour and generosity lift me up every day. I am honoured to be in community with all of you.
